The winter months can be brutal for homes and yards, alike. Especially harsh winter months with freezing temperatures and foot after foot of snow can really do a number on homes. Basements and interiors can become flooded, roofs can cave from heavy snow and ice, and poorly insulated homes can become very cold. For homes with basement window wells that aren’t covered, melting snow and ice can seep and leak through the window wells and cause problems for not only the interior of the home, but also for the homes foundation.
As the melting snow and ice leak into a home through the open basement window well, mold can grow due to the moisture seeping into the home, and that, in turn, will cause air quality issues in the home and for all that live in the home. Cleaning snow from the area around an open basement window well can also be dangerous, as falls have been known to happen, especially when basement window wells are covered by snow and ice.
Keep snow, ice, and all the elements away from your window well by installing a custom basement window well cover. Basement window well covers help in protecting the home from melting ice and snow, and moisture in general. With the addition of a window well cover, snow, ice, and water won’t be able to reach the basement window well, itself. Therefore, flooding and moisture issues shouldn’t be a problem once a window well cover is installed. It is good to remember that using a “one size fits all”-type of well covering isn’t the best method. These types of window well covers can allow water to reach the window well and also have a tendency to blow off during heavy rain or snow storms.
Any basement window well that is built for a home, must provide an egress, or escape, in case of an emergency to those residing in the home. Window well covers that are removable or have a hatch to open allow for residents to use the window well as a means of escape during an emergency. With harsh winter weather, emergencies can happen at any time. Perhaps the weight of snow and ice has caused the roof to cave in and the only viable option to escape the home safely is through the window well. Having a functioning window well cover that allows for easy access to the exterior of the home is paramount in being able to leave the home safely.
When it comes to protecting a home during the winter months, don’t skimp on the basement window well. Make sure it has a proper window well cover that will protect the home from the elements, flooding, and will allow easy escape if it is needed.
