Time for spring clean up

The calendar page has flipped to April and that means spring has sprung. It also means time for spring up and garden work. While you are picking up twigs, raking the forgotten leaves and mulching the garden, consider what you need to do to spruce up the outside of your home.

Deck and porch areas

One of the best parts of spring is finally being able to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. First, you need to inspect, repair and clean your living space.

Wash the siding – It’s easy to hose down the siding or use a pressure washer to clean off any dirt. Treat mildew stains with one part oxygen bleach to three parts water, then rinse.
Perk up the deck – While you have the hose or pressure washer out take some time to clean your deck or porch. Be careful not to use too much pressure so you do not damage the paint or any brick, stone or other surfaces. Repair any damage your seating area may have suffered due to winter storms.
Clean your patio furniture – A basic all-purpose cleaner is usually best for cleaning all kinds of outdoor furniture.

Windows

All those months of winter weather can leave windows pretty dingy. Let the sunshine in!

Screens – Hose screens off gently or wash with a mild soap and water solution.
Windows- Using a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water will leave your windows squeaky clean and is environmentally safe. If you have city grime that won’t come off add a squirt of dishing washing liquid.
Woodwork frames – Scrape, prime, and paint any peeling areas on your woodwork or window trim. Taking care of this in spring will help protect the wood from summer heat and insects.
