Here’s an easy way to add insulation to your windows and still let light in. You won’t be able to see out without removing at least part of the insulation. But it will cut down on the heat loss.
If you can keep yourself from popping the bubble wrap, save it for window insulation.
You’re going to need:
Bubble wrap, a bit more than you need to cover the window.
A sharp knife and scissor.
A clean bubble window, on the inside.
A spray bottle.
Some glycerin (you can get this at most drug stores).
Water.
Step 1. Measure the window. Cut the bubble wrap so it covers the glass. It needs to sit as close as you can to the edges without overlap.
Step 2. Fill the bottle with water. Add a few drops of glycerin. Shake thoroughly.
Step 3. Lightly spray the window with this mixture. You don’t want enough spray to make it run. Just a light mist is enough.
Step 4. Press the bubble wrap into place, bubbles against the glass.
This works for most windows. If your application is not sticking, you can use double-sided tape around the edges of the window to hold the bubble wrap in place.
Your window is now insulated. It’s not transparent, but it does let most of the light through.
You can order colored bubble wrap if you need to create a specific kind of lighting through the bubble window for special occasions.
To remove the glycerin-applied bubble wrap, just grab a corner and peel it away. The window can be wiped down with a towel. If you had to use tape, most double-sided tape adhesive will dissolve with vegetable oil.
Soak a corner of a towel in the vegetable oil and as you pull the tape away, wipe it with the towel. Allow the oil to dissolve the adhesive just enough to keep pulling it down. Clean the window with a light mixture of water and a grease-cutting cleaner.
If you just want colored bubble wrap up for light for just a short while, get some painter’s tape to hold it in place. Painter’s tape has a very light adhesive and it comes away clean.
