Trick or Treat Safety Tips for Your Home

It’s one of the sweetest times of the year and not just because of the candy! On Trick or Treat Night, all the excited youngsters coming door-to-door brings the community together and lets you be part of the festivities by handing out treats. As you are getting ready with fall decorations and buying the best candy, don’t forget to prepare your property, too. You wouldn’t want Halloween night to be spoiled by someone becoming injured or hurt at your home.

Before Trick or Treat Night take a walk around your property and look for any safety hazards. Take your walk at night so that you can observe your property exactly how it will be when all the visitors come.

As you are walking take notice of these areas of your property.

On your property do you have:

Properly secured railings for the steps to your front porch?
Any tripping hazards in your walkway or driveway? If so, arrange for repairs.
Porch lighting installed with working lightbulbs?
Lights on either side of your walkway? Battery-operated tea lights in white paper bags give off an eerie glow if you need to add temporary lighting.
Jack o’ lantern or pumpkins for decoration? If you add light in your jack o’ lantern, make sure that you use battery-operated lights instead of a flame candle. Set your pumpkins back away from the walkway or the porch so they do not get knocked over and result in a slippery mess.
A swimming pool? Be sure that the cover is on properly.
Any loose rocks or large branches on your yard that someone could trip over?
Window wells? Window wells should be covered with a strong, custom-made Window Bubble to prevent anyone from falling into the window well. Begin with the measuring instructions for your particular type of basement window.
Excitable pets? Keep your pets away from the door on Halloween night. It may stress the pet and cause him to jump or bite. Even if your pet is friendly, some young children are afraid of dogs or cats. Even the sight of a pet might stress one of the little ones coming to your door.

Remember, it is your responsibility to make sure any visitor to your property remains safe.

Take a few minutes to assess your home before Halloween night. And don’t forget to hand out the big candy bars! The moms and dads, I mean, the KIDS will thank you!
