11 Ways to Maximize Space in a Tiny Basement Apartment

Whether your basement is your bedroom, family room, or your entire living area, there are tons of clever ways to maximize your space!

Create an entryway with a narrow parsons desk and some colorful baskets tucked underneath for storage. One basket can be for shoes and another for jackets or umbrellas. Place a tray on top of the desk for your keys.
Maximize the space under the stairs. Transform it into a storage area with shelves and use it for books, games, or a pantry. Adding a door keeps the storage out of sight for a less cluttered look.
Use smaller couches. Basement spaces tend to be the place where you throw any old huge outdated sectional. Instead, position loveseats and armchairs that seat two for the same amount of seating in a cozy arrangement.
Take advantage of the height. Make sure any shelves you use against the wall are floor to ceiling. Use tall narrow shelves or ladder-like shelves next to your bed instead of a nightstand.
In the bathroom, mount floating shelves or wooden crates above the toilet to use for storing extra toilet paper rolls and towels.
Opt for a stackable washer and dryer. If this is not an option, install cabinets above the washer and dryer for detergent and other needs.
In the kitchen, find benches for seating instead of chairs. Use benches that have a seat that opens up with storage. These same benches can double as a coffee table. Drop leaf tables give you space to eat and entertain without having to keep up a big table all the time. Gate leg tables give even more space when collapsed.
Cut out a narrow section of the wall between the studs to create a broom closet.
Hang drapes and curtains from floor to ceiling to make the room feel bigger. Even if the windows are high and small, the curtains will bring your eyes to the whole length of the wall.

Hang mirrors. Since basements tend to have a lack of light, a large mirror or a collage of mirrors can amplify the light that is in the basement giving the illusion of more space.
